Oh Germans.

Miniatur Wunderland cannot be explored in a couple of minutes. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to show you Wunderland in a 4 minute movie, but we can at least give your some impressions

Piano Table by Georg Bohle

This smooth, simple oak table has a musical secret under its hood– lift a door on its side and you’ll expose a full, 88-key electric piano. The Piano Table by Georg Bohle is one of the most inventive pieces of furniture we’ve seen in some time, merging the musical with the modern. The table itself is ideal for a dining room, it stretches long enough to fit a whole family and is unobtrusive in design. After the meal, however, flip open the piano door and you and your guests can enjoy a bit of man (or woman) made music. Such a special piece of furniture does not come cheap, however, as this piano table is made to order at $6,000 a piece.

OTO Machines BISCUIT: 8-bit + Analog Filter Effect

From Create Digital Music:

OTO Machines’ BISCUIT is new 8-bit effect processing hardware from a boutique design firm in Paris. The essential effect is all 8-bit: using 8-bit converters and processing, you can add crunchy, digital waveshaping, delay, pitch shift, and step filter effects. But because those processes produce distortion and aliasing, BISCUIT combines its 8-bit effects with an analog resonant filter. (It’s switchable, so if you want to retain all the artifacts, you can – but you also have a filter at the ready.)

The whole design is a lovely exercise in reducing a set of sound capabilities to their most essential elements. The appearance of the front panel, though, is deceptively simple. Multifunctional uses, all provided within the eight buttons at bottom and the parameter controls at top, allow effects from filtering and basic bit reduction to wild, radical bit destruction, step-sequenced filtering, delay, and even a little synthesis.

The BISCUIT is also fully MIDI-enabled: every control sends MIDI, and every function receives MIDI CC. Critical to its step-sequenced and delay functions, BISCUIT receives MIDI clock, as well, or you can use tap tempo.

Finally, quality and local production figure prominently in the OTO: the company advertises that they don’t outsource production and work entirely with local companies in France.

Price: EUR529 including VAT (so 442,30 if you’re outside Europe). Available now:
http://www.otomachines.com

That’s pricey, I know, but it also packs as much sonic power as a collection of several Moog effects – and likewise might be the only effects box you need.

And, oh yeah – the future of BISCUIT may provide more than it does now.

I got to look more closely at the BISCUIT (think “bis-QWEE” as in French), at least on paper. I’ve also had the chance to talk to one of the creators about the evolution of this box, which reveals something of the process of hardware creation in general.

Origami Table

Furniture designer Martin Pinotak’s ‘Origami’ table represents a wonderful combination of intricate design and functionality; combining the clean, dynamic lines of the tables base with a solid glass top make this piece a usable work of art. Working out of Toronto, Canada, Pinotak’s work often exemplifies high design with an emphasis on maintaining the usefulness of a given piece. ‘Origami’ achieves this level of practicality without sacrificing the creative statements it makes; a piece of furniture that combines minimalist design with maximum function.

'Family Guy' Actress Responds To Sarah Palin's Criticism

Andrea Fay Friedman, the voice actress who played the role of "Ellen" --the character depicted as having Down syndrome on the Valentine's Day episode of Family Guy, has responded to the criticism of sometime-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Of special significance, Friedman herself has Down syndrome. Palingates has Friedman's complete response:

My name is Andrea Fay Friedman. I was born with Down syndrome. I played the role of Ellen on the "Extra Large Medium" episode of Family Guy that was broadcast on Valentine's day. Although they gave me red hair on the show, I am really a blonde. I also wore a red wig for my role in " Smudge" but I was a blonde in "Life Goes On". I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line "I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska" was very funny. I think the word is "sarcasm".

In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes.

Poll: Large Number Of Texans Doubt The Theory Of Evolution, Believe In Human-Dinosaur Coexistence

A new University of Texas/Texas Tribune survey shows just how destructive a politicized right-wing curriculum can be. A large number of Texans polled said they still don’t believe in evolution and are convinced that humans and dinosaurs co-existed:

51 percent disagree with the statement, “Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals.”

38 percent agree with the statement, “God created human beings pretty much in their present form about 10,000 years ago.”

30 percent agree with the statement, “Humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time.” Another 30 percent said they “don’t know” whether the statement is true.

Refusing to believe in evolution is a point of pride for many conservatives, who are also trying to indoctrinate young people with their same misguided views. The right-wing Texas State Board of Education has been reviewing the direction of the state’s social studies curriculum and textbook standards. Some of their changes include adding “causes and key organizations and individuals of the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s,” “documents that supported Cold War-era Sen. Joseph McCarthy,” and how to “differentiate between legal and illegal immigration.”

In terms of textbook standards, as Texas goes, so goes the nation. The state “is one of the nation’s biggest buyers of textbooks.” Publishers are often “reluctant to produce different versions of the same material,” and therefore create books in line with Texas’ standards.

Adidas Originals AdiGame ZX 500 Runners

Introduced in the mid 80’s as a bio-mechanically correct, high mileage trail/road running shoe, the ZX 500 featured a particularly unique sole: with multi-purpose rubber outsole studs that gripped on soft ground, but retreated into the tread on harder surfaces. Representing the technological age of the 1980s, this version features a patterned fabric combined with a mesh to partly disguise the striping pattern and employs neon colors to emphasize the graphic style of the time.

Kitsune- Ivy League collection 2010 Preview

French label Kitsune gives us a preview of their Ivy League collection for the upcoming Autumn/Winter season. Fresh off of previewing their “Golf Club” range, we now get a good sense of Kitsune’s direction. The collegiate lifestyle is now the label’s aim with intelligent looks and styles reflecting the fashion in Universities across the globe. Cardigans, vests, suits, and more are included in the collection with colors such as yellows, reds, and blues as the standout. The aesthetic definitely works well for those looking for a label alternative to the likes of RRL or even J.Crew.

Fucifier Tweak Box

Evol has announced the Fucifier distortion box. The Fucifier allows you to shape your sounds in new inventive ways via a combination of amplification, distortion, analog filtering and/or EQ.

Everything in the signal chain, from the Mic Pre, the Vintage Germanium Preamp, the Filter, and the inductors in the Equalizer to the output transformer, is designed to be overdriven, saturated, overloaded or distorted in a pleasing way.

Mix and match the Vintage Germanium Preamp for a little warmth or overdrive, the Tape Saturation overdrive for a little compression and limiting or a bit of saturation, the Filter/Crossover (which in itself sounds great overdriven or even pushed into self oscillation with a sufficient amount of resonance), the Dual Band Distortion which allows you to mix many different kinds of distortion, and the vintage-style inductor based equalizer to shape the overall tone and color of the sound.

Features:
» Branded real wood front panel, custom finished by hand
» Color coded, lighted acrylic, audio responsive gain meter knobs to see at a glance where your various gain stage levels are
» Discrete mic preamp
» Low noise, high quality balanced line input
» Gain control of mic, instrument & dry mix gain in addition to control of overall input gain
» True relay bypass of each effect section using lighted indicator ring metal push buttons
» The Vintage Germanium Preamp section uses specially matched NOS vintage germanium transistors for added warmth and a great overdrive sound
» True Analog Filter:
— variable freq & resonance
— LFO with variable amplitude and speed, an envelope detector and expression pedal control which can all be used separately or in conjunction to control filter frequency
— selectable high pass, band pass, or band pass + high pass filter response modes for the high freq distortion section- separate low pass & high pass outputs on the back panel for processing each band separately with external gear
» Dual Band Distortion allows control over:
— drive, distortion amount, distortion type (6 modes), clipping symmetry & low freq/high freq blend control to blend the two distortion sections in varying degrees
— Inductor Based EQ with 5 bands of boost/cut: low, mid, high bands plus a low shelf & high shelf
— Speaker output to plug a speaker cabinet into your Fucifier for use as an amp sim or even an amp!
— Wet/Dry signal blend control
— Transformer coupled, discrete Class A output section
— Internal regulated AC power supply (no wall warts!)
— 2 space, 19 incf rack mount enclosure
